Driving Tips For Teen Drivers & You

The day your teenager has been dreaming about is finally here. They are old enough to get behind the wheel and start learning how to drive. It’s scary, we know. If you are nervous about their newfound independence, Tommy’s Hi Tech Auto Repair wants to remind you that preparing them with as much knowledge as possible to help ease your mind the next time they ask for the keys.

Don’t Drive Distracted

This is a big one for teenagers. Their phones are practically connected to their bodies all day and they probably think they can handle sending a quick text or picking up the phone while they are driving. Not only is using your phone while driving extremely dangerous – but it is also illegal. Texas drivers can be fined $200 for each cellphone offense.

Remind your teen that no message is that important and equip them with a hands-free system in the event that they do need to answer the phone. Also, point out safe places to stop and park along their normal route if they do need to send a text message.

Obey the Speed Limit

Your teenager may be tempted to put pressure on the gas pedal when they are running late for school or cutting it a little too close for curfew. Talk to them about time management and leaving room in their schedule for traffic. Speeding is a good way to rack up traffic tickets and can put your child and other drivers at risk for an accident.

Behave Safely During Traffic Stops

In an ideal world, your teenager will obey all traffic laws and never give police a reason to pull them over. Unfortunately, this isn’t an ideal world. Talk to your teen about how to behave during traffic stops. Make sure they know how and where to pull over safely and what to do when there is not an appropriate place available. Tell them how to interact with police and make sure they know where all of their paperwork is located.

Take Care Of Your Car

Your teenager doesn’t just need to learn how to be a responsible driver. They also need to learn the ins and outs of becoming a responsible car owner. Talk to them about vehicle maintenance. Better yet, bring them along when you take your car to be serviced or repaired. Have them ask the questions so they will be comfortable when the time comes to fly solo.

When it comes time to introduce your teenager to a mechanic you know they can trust, Tommy’s Hi Tech Auto Repair is here to help. Give us a call at 940-387-0070 to schedule your next maintenance or repair appointment.
