Check Engine Light in Denton

No one likes to see the check engine light come on. The check engine lights in our cars are there to alert us when parts or systems are damaged or straining, so seeing it means something is wrong. But we should appreciate these little lights!  They’re an early warning system, giving drivers and car owners a chance to investigate and identify issues before they become severe — and expensive.

Because check engine lights are connected to many different systems in our cars — including the oxygen sensors, spark plugs, ignition coils, even the gas cap — just seeing the light does not tell you what the issue is. But Tommy’s Hi Tech Auto Repair’s ASE-certified technicians and high-tech equipment have plenty of experience and know just where to look to identify the problem. From there, we will walk you through the needed repairs and fix what needs fixing.

Check Engine Light FAQs

What is a Check Engine Light?

A check engine light is a small icon that will light up on the dashboard of a vehicle to let the driver or owner know something is broken or malfunctioning in the engine. The icon is generally orange or yellow and has a simplified engine block symbol or the words “check engine.” This alert light is an early warning system that something is wrong but fixable before things get severe. If the light starts flashing, however, the problem has become more immediate, and the vehicle should be brought in for repairs.

What Can Cause a Check Engine Light to Turn On?

There are many car parts and systems that, when damaged or stressed, can cause the check engine light to come on. Some of common causes are:

  • Catalytic Converters - Catalytic converters prevent pollutants from releasing through the tailpipe. If they become clogged or need replacement, they can trigger the check engine light.

  • Oxygen Sensors - Also called O2 sensors, oxygen sensors measure the amount of oxygen concentration in the car’s exhaust, and is one of the most common causes of a check engine light.

  • Spark Plugs - Spark plugs deliver the ‘spark’ required to ignite the fuel-air combination in a vehicle’s engine to start it. As the plugs take on more wear and tear, they may prompt the check engine light.
